and I followd in a lengthy spe[e]ch in which I was engaged when— at about 10 oclock 2 young men arrivd as express from stating that the mob were collecting at . also around Col . & messenge[r]s had gone to to reinfor[c]e the mob.
<​before closing my speech I withdr[e]w the action. & told the court I would forgive — & the 2 men who followd him from 4½ mile below and take them home give them supper & lodging and breakfast and see that th[e]y were protected. & the cou[r]t disch[ar]ged .​>
— made a dimand on me as mayor for a detachmet of <​posey [posse]​> to send to s assistanc[e] whom he had sent with a warrant this aftern[oo]n to apprehnd as being concernd in kidnappi[n]g . which demand I complied with. and . by my instructi[o]n. detachd with 1000 100 men.— Also an affidavit of . that the peace of the city was in dander [danger] I. as [p.
