Grouard, Benjamin Franklin

Biography

4 Jan. 1819–18 Mar. 1894. Farmer, brickmaker. Born in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. Son of Francis Grouard and Sophronia. Married first Caroline Mode, 30 May 1839, in Philadelphia. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, after 1841. Received elder’s license, 4 Sept. 1842. Appointed to serve mission to Sandwich Islands with Noah Rogers, Addison Pratt, and Knowlton F. Hanks, May 1843. Ordained a seventy, 23 May 1843, in Nauvoo. Sailed from New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, to Society Islands, 9 Oct. 1843. While on mission, married second Tearo, ca. 1846. Wife died; married third Nahina. Presided over Society Islands mission, 1847–1850. Arrived in San Francisco, 1 July 1852. Moved to San Bernardino, Los Angeles Co., California, 1852. Disfellowshipped and excommunicated, ca. spring 1855, in San Bernardino. Became a spiritualist. Moved to Los Angeles, by 1860; to San Francisco, by 1862; and to Santa Ana, Los Angeles Co., by 1880. Died in Santa Ana.
