Moved to what became Kaskaskia, Randolph Co., Illinois, 1800. Attended college and studied law in Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee. Served in War of 1812. Married first Catherine Dubuque Manegle, 4 Feb. 1818, in St. Clair Co., Illinois Territory. Served in Illinois House of Representatives, 1827–1829. Served as governor of Illinois, 1830–1834. Served as commander of Illinois state militia during Black Hawk War, 1832. Represented Illinois in U.S. House of Representatives, 1834–1837, 1839–1843. Married second Sarah Evaline Wilson, 9 July 1836, in Washington DC. Died at Belleville, St. Clair Co.
