Biography

12 Oct. 1813–25 June 1896. Teacher, lawyer, judge, statesman. Born in Colchester, New London Co., Connecticut. Son of Benjamin Trumbull and Elizabeth Mather. Moved to Greenville, Meriwether Co., Georgia, 1833. Admitted to bar, 1837, in Georgia. Moved to Belleville, St. Clair Co., Illinois, 1837. Elected to Illinois legislature, 1840. Served as secretary of state, 1841–1843. Married first Julia M. Jayne, 23 June 1843, in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois. Served as justice of Illinois Supreme Court, 1848–1853. Moved to Alton, Madison Co., Illinois, 1848. Served in U.S. Senate, 1855–1873. Moved to Springfield, by June 1860. Moved to Chicago, 1863. Known as father of Thirteenth Amendment of U.S. Constitution, 1864. Instrumental in passing first Civil Service Act in U.S., 1870. Married second Mary J. Ingraham, 3 Nov. 1877, in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. Died in Chicago.
