Corresponding Chapters in Editions of the Book of Mormon
This table provides corresponding chapter and page
information to assist readers in referencing different editions of the
Book of Mormon. The table is organized according to the chapter numbers
found in the first printed edition (1830), given in the left column.
Because the Book of Mormon published by The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints is the most widely available edition of the text, the
table is further subdivided to coincide with chapter breaks in the
current (2013) Latter-day Saint edition.
Unique supplementary material in each edition, such as
copyright information and various prefaces, is represented in the first
table row. Corresponding page numbers are then given for the original
title page, “The Testimony of Three Witnesses,” and “The Testimony of
Eight Witnesses.”
The second and third columns contain corresponding page
numbers in the original manuscript and the printer’s manuscript of the
Book of Mormon, the latter being the copy of the original manuscript
delivered to the printer for use in setting the type of the first
printed edition. As neither manuscript contains paragraph breaks, line
numbers are provided in addition to page numbers.
Because so little of the original manuscript is extant, the
page and line numbers in the “OM” column of this table may not represent
complete chapters. Page and line numbers for the original manuscript are
taken from Royal Skousen’s The Original Manuscript of the Book of
Mormon: Typographical Facsimile of the Extant Text (Provo,
UT: Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, Brigham Young
University, 2001). Skousen’s page numbering for 1 Nephi through Enos
came from extant page numbers in the manuscript, and any unnumbered
manuscript pages referenced in this table are bracketed. Beginning in
Alma, page numbers were estimated by Skousen and are presented here in
brackets with a question mark.
When assigning line numbers to the original manuscript,
Skousen excluded the one-line heading often written to summarize each
page and instead began with the first line of Book of Mormon text.
Skousen also frequently supplied text where the manuscript is extant but
the text illegible, and these supplied lines are included in his line
numbering and in this table. For most of the manuscript, Skousen
estimated the line numbers of page fragments in relation to the complete
page. However, from page 429 through the end of the manuscript, he
assigned numbering beginning with the first extant line of the
fragment.
The fourth through seventh columns in this table provide
corresponding page numbers from editions of the Book of Mormon published
during Joseph Smith’s lifetime, beginning in 1830.
The eighth and ninth columns contain the corresponding
versification in the 1992 Community of Christ edition and the 2013
Latter-day Saint edition.
