Editorial Note
The previous meeting adjourned sine die after JS expressed concern that the council’s “continual coming together” might raise too many questions. “We can call the council together again when necessary,” he added. JS called this meeting just eight days later, on 3 May 1844. The return of from on 1 May and of the following day from his mission to the to negotiate a possible Mormon settlement there provided the impetus. Given the short notice, only twenty-four members attended this “special meeting of the council,” just shy of the number needed to form a quorum and respond officially to the reports. The council convened at 2:00 p.m. and listened to a detailed report by Woodworth of his negotiations with in Texas. JS and others further discussed plans for sending a group of Latter-day Saints to Texas. After adjourning at 6:00 p.m. for supper, the council reconvened at 8:00 p.m. and continued to discuss several matters, including the rising difficulties with and . JS then proposed adjourning until Monday, 6 May. , the council’s clerk, was absent for the meeting; , the recorder, likely took the minutes.

Friday May 3rd. 1844 2 P. M. Special meeting of the council called by the standing chairman. the secretary was absent and the minutes of the previous meetings not at hand & the reading was dispensed with. Er sung “Hail Columbia” &c. Calling the roll was omitted, 24 members present. Council opened by prayer from .
The chairman introduced Er to the council who expressed a belief that before long the kingdom of God would be set up and the will of God be done on the earth as it is done in heaven. He was unacquainted with the meeting, having been absent 9 months. He was ordained [p. [217]]
