wrote a memorial to Congress—

<​29​> At home clear & cold
left for home taking with him a copy of the Memorial to get signers in — a copy of which I here insert (Copy) Eleven copies were <​also​> made for distribution <​circulation​> & signature, by and one of my Clerks—
4 p m “a meeting of the Citizens in the Assembly room to as follows (copy) <​-[also the Decr. 4 minutes <​on same sheet​>]-​> early candle light”

<​30​> at 10 a m rode out with Mr. Jackson—
at home of most of the day—
The “Appeal to the Green Mountain Boys” sent to press
Severe frost, so that ice is on the water in <​the​> houses—
writes to “Major John Bills (copy) Auditor”
enclosing the opinion of the Atty. Genl. as follows “ (copy) Atty General”
and the opinion <​copy​> of letter from J N McDougall to “Genl. (copy) McDougall”
reported to Mr. <​Major​> Bills that the returns made out for Cane <​Mr Bills & sent to the Adjt.General State of Department​> were the best reports made <​made by any Brigade Major​> in the and did him great credit: the refusal to pay him for his services is no doubt a <​mere​> pretext, <​*​> & were it not for the prejudice against us for on account of our religion— his claim would have been paid without a word of demure complaint.
<​* As the Nauvoo Charter provides <​requires​>, that the Officers of the shall perform the same amount of duty as is now or may hereafter be required of the regular malitia of the , & shall be at the disposal of the Governor for the public defence, & the execution of the laws of the State, & be entitled to their proportion of the State Arms​>
