4 July 1843 • Tuesday
July 4. Independenc[e] Elder Lectur[e]d Lectu[re]d at the . at 10½ A.M.—— after which Joseph gave a short address. concerning his arrest to correct Reports cir[c]ulated by a collection was then taken to help build s house.— at 12½ meeting adjournd till 2½ P.M.— it had been published that Elder would prea[c]h in the P.M. but as he had gone to . . preached. on redemption.— during sermon a steam boat arrived from . with some 3 or 400 passinges [passengers] a pleasure party. who were escorted by the band and some companies of Soldiers— & seated near the center of the crowd.— a boat had previously arrived from — and another from . the passengers on the three boats numberd from 8[00] to 1000. after sermon. Presidnt J. Smith. gave a br[i]ef relati[o]n of his capture— detention. treatmnt & trial. (whi[c]h will be given in full hereafter.) all of which gave great satisfaction to apparently to all parties. & the visitors— as well as saints. appeard highly gratified— the day was. pleasant.— sky clear— and nothing tended to disturb the peace. except one man in the crowd said he would give $500 for Jo Smith scalp.— he was it was ordered he shou[l]d be arrested— but was not to be found. after Joseph’s speech. proposed. on his own responsibility, a collection to assist Gen Smith [p.
