Friday May 17— 1844 In Convention of the state in my office calld to promote my Election.— Cha[i]rman— merryweathe [Frederick Merryweather] secretary— minets [minutes] to be publishd in next paper
Rode out towa[r]ds night. about 6.
evening a caucus in— my office chairmn— was sick— & I could not attend.— the people burnd a barrel of Tar.— gave m[a]ny toasts—— carrid me on their shoulders twice round th[e] fire— & escortd me to my by a band of music
