Beginning with the first of the in June 1830, conferences often served as settings for ordaining individuals to church offices. Judging from extant minutes, many conferences included both ordinations and other church business. However, the minutes of this 16 November 1832 conference in , Ohio, suggest that ordinations were at times the sole business of a conference. These minutes record that JS , who had recently returned from a mission with , as an . JS’s scribe acted as clerk of the meeting and later entered the minutes into Minute Book 1.
