Biography
6 May 1817–16 Jan. 1908. Bookkeeper, clerk, teacher, farmer. Born in Dansville, Steuben Co., New York. Son of Silas Coray and Mary Stephens. Moved to Providence, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, ca. 1827; to Williams, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, by 1830; and to Pike Co., Illinois, ca. Jan. 1839. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 24/25 Mar. 1840, near Perry, Pike Co. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. Apr. 1840. Served as clerk for JS and helped compile church history. Ordained an elder by JS, 3 Sept. 1840. Married Martha Jane Knowlton, 6 Feb. 1841, in Hancock Co. Served mission to Pennsylvania, Nov. 1842–1843. Ordained a high priest, 4 June 1843, at Nauvoo. With wife, helped Lucy Mack Smith write history of JS, 1844–1845. Arrived in Salt Lake City, spring 1850. Moved to E. T. City (later Lake Point), Tooele Co., Utah Territory, ca. 1854; to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1857; to Juab Co., Utah Territory, 1871; and back to Provo, fall 1880. Served mission to Smyth Co., Virginia, June 1882–Apr. 1883. Lived in Salt Lake City, by 1900. Died in Salt Lake City.
