Holmes, Jonathan Harriman
Biography
11 Mar. 1806–18 Aug. 1880. Shoemaker, farmer. Born in Georgetown, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Son of Nathaniel Holmes and Sally Harriman. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John F. Boynton, 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, and lived with JS, 1834. Ordained a seventy, by 7 Apr. 1836. Received elder’s certificate, 16 May 1836, in Kirtland. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Married first to Marietta Carter by Frederick G. Williams, 13 Apr. 1837, in Geauga Co. Moved to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, ca. 1838; to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, Feb. 1839; and to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by May 1840. Wife died, 20 Sept. 1840. Married second Elvira Annie Cowles, 1 Dec. 1842, in Nauvoo. Moved into JS’s household, 9 Feb. 1843. Arrested for destruction of Nauvoo Expositor press and set free by municipal court, 13 June 1844. Named with JS and others in writ sworn out by Francis M. Higbee and thereafter accompanied JS to Carthage, 24 June 1844. Helped bury and later rebury JS, 29 June 1844 and fall 1844. Served in Mormon Battalion, 1846–1847. Moved to Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, 1847; to Salt Lake City, 1848; and to Farmington, Davis Co., Utah Territory, by 1850. Died in Farmington.
