Carlin, Thomas
Biography
18 July 1789–14 Feb. 1852. Ferry owner, farmer, sheriff, politician. Born in Fayette Co., Kentucky. Son of Thomas Carlin and Elizabeth Evans. Baptist. Moved to what became Missouri, by 1803. Moved to Illinois Territory, by 1812. Served in War of 1812. Married Rebecca Hewitt, 13 Dec. 1814, in Madison Co., Illinois Territory. Moved to Greene Co., Illinois Territory, 1818. Appointed first sheriff of Greene Co., 1821. Served as state senator, 1824–1828. Donated land for construction of public buildings in Carrollton, Greene Co. Served in Black Hawk War as captain of spy battalion in Illinois Mounted Volunteers, 1832. Appointed receiver of public monies by U.S. president Andrew Jackson, 1834, in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Affiliated with Church of Christ in Quincy. Served as governor of Illinois, 1838–1842. Issued warrant for arrest of JS for alleged involvement in attempt to kill former Missouri governor Lilburn W. Boggs, 1842. Returned to Carrollton, 1842. Elected state representative, 1849. Died near Carrollton.
