Pickens District, South Carolina
District in northwest South Carolina bordering North Carolina and Georgia. Located south of Blue Ridge Mountains. Named for Revolutionary War officer Andrew Pickens. Population in 1830 about 14,500. Population in 1850 about 17,000. South Carolina senator John C. Calhoun wrote to JS from district, 2 Dec. 1843, responding to JS’s inquiry regarding Calhoun’s policies toward Latter-day Saints should he be elected president.
